
SWEETGRASS [Hierochloe odorata]
Becoming quite rare – this wonderfully fragrant dried grass is used for basketry, crafts and ceremonies by many Native people. Produces seed in early spring. Requires full sun and can reach lengths of three to four feet.
SNEEZEWEED [Helenium autumnale]
This late summer bloomer offers an abundance of yellow reflexed flowers with a sphere like centre. Requires full sun and can reach heights of five feet. Ontario native.
CARDINAL FLOWER [Lobelia cardinalis]
This amazing pond-side plant attracts the Ruby-throated hummingbird. Its scarlet red petals are stunning! Southern Ontario native, averages two feet in height.
BONESET [Eupatorium perfoliatum]
Medicinal plant-used for colds, fever and stomach pain. Offers white flower clusters in late summer and averages three feet in height.
BLUE VERVAIN [Verbena hastata]
This fast growing biennial has deep blue flower spikes in late summer. A wonderful addition to any wetland planting. Requires full sun and averages three feet in height.
BUTTON BUSH [Cephalanthus occidentalis]
A hard-to-find, summer flowering shrub with white golfball-like flowers. Attracts butterflies and waterfowl. Can reach up to eight feet. Carolinian specie.
WILD ELDERBERRY [Sambucus canadensis]
Medicinal plant. Offers white flowers in early summer, requires full sun and can reach heights up to twelve feet. Ripened fruit can be used in all your favourite recipes.
